My two columns last week were about two entities, Americans Elect and the Libertarian Party, who are offering voters a choice other than President Obama and Mitt Romney.
A reader – and I’m glad just to have one – wrote me after seeing the Americans Elect column to say that two parties are enough and that choosing anyone other than Obama or Romney is a wasted vote.
To the contrary, in the last 24 years, the only presidential vote I have not wasted was the ballot I cast in 1992, when I voted for Ross Perot, the Reform Party candidate.
While the major party candidates have spent my voting years making promises they could not hope to keep, Perot told the truth about the government’s unfortunate habit of spending far more than it collects. Instead of empty 30-second attack ads, he ran honest 30-minute infomercials explaining the problem and offering solutions. He had enough support that the party-controlled Commission on Presidential Debates had no choice but to include him. It has not included a non-major party candidate since.
He was temperamentally ill-suited to be president, but that was not the point. My seemingly insignificant ballot helped Perot win 19 percent of the vote, which got the Washington power elites’ attention. Hoping to reclaim their portions of those voters, President Clinton and members of both parties in Congress took steps that led to a very temporary budget surplus. The government still owed a lot of money. But for a very brief span of time, it wasn’t adding that much to it.
Then the Republicans and Democrats went back to bankrupting the country. Back when Perot was sounding the alarm, the national debt was $4 trillion. In the 20 years since then, the two major parties have not faced an outside threat. Not coincidentally, the debt has reached nearly $16 trillion, or more than $50,000 for every American man, woman and child.
